Harbinger - 3D printed guitar concept, 2013

The Harbinger was an exploration of what digital fabrication could mean for a product that was firmly rooted in traditional craft.

The idea of the Harbinger is to exploit the speed and ease of 3D printing in order to give musicians the flexibility to have multiple shaped guitars based off a single platform. Allowing customization without permanently changing the instrument.  Finding a balance required having an intimate understanding of both Luthier (stringed instrument maker) and of 3D printing in order to not lose the 'spirit' of the instrument. 

This lead to building the core platform of the guitar from scratch so that 3D printing could incorporated seamlessly into the instrument as a whole.



This project was completed as part of my final year a VUW School of Design,

and was all built during a period of about 8 weeks.
